Lillie Johnson Obituary Lillie Mae Johnson was born September 14, 1931 to Fred and Susanna (Wilson) Germany in Tuskegee, AL. She was baptized at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Tuskegee, AL at an early age. She moved to Cleveland, OH in 1954, where she married Booker Johnson. They were married for seventeen years and together, had eight children. She was the mother-of-the-church at Liverpool Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. Leon Riley. Lillie Mae left on the morning train because the evening train may have been too late. Her eldest and youngest children, Johnny and Sharon, preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn six children: Helen Williams (Robert), Charlestine Johnson, Arlinda Johnson, Gregory (Cecila) Johnson, Dell Jetta Johnson, and Patricia Johnson. From her came many generations. She had 17 grandchildren, and a host of great and great-great grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Lillie Bradford. Thirteen siblings preceded her in death: Jonnie Mae Campbell, Hattie Germany, Sadie Dubois, Mozell Germany, Carrie Crawford, Eldora Cooper, Dazell Johnson, Bessie Grady, Naomi Buchanan, Ernest Germany, Fred Germany, James Germany, and Tobe Germany. Above all things, she was loved. And she was love. And she loved. Simple. Unadorned. Pure. To the very end, she was surrounded by a love she had cared for, tended to, woke throughout the night for, fiercely protected. She was loved. She had limits. These were plain. And yet, she made things happen. Never let her children go without water, gas, lights, or food. Don’t know how she did it. But that, I believe, is what we call magic. She was of the Silent Generation. Didn’t explain much. Didn’t put herself in the center. Off to the side, she’d laugh, talk, and fuss a bit. And she made things happen. Always. She was a woman of duty. She watched over us. She celebrated our highs. And was by our side in our lows. Her love was of solid action. We took this as fact, like sun, like air. She smiled wide. Laughed deep. Cut her eyes and would squeeze the laugh out of your hand just to show you she could. Her laugh, followed by, “Oh, gal,” turned the sting to a grasp of love, because that’s how she loved. Meticulous with time, she’d wake you up, every day. She wrote down the lottery numbers in case anyone needed them. She would pat you on the back that made you stumble a bit, but her other hand steadied you, and she’d rub where she just hit.
