John Malone Obituary John Reece Malone Sr. trailblazer, public servant, educator, entrepreneur and humanitarian was born in Cleveland, Ohio May 19, 1924 to his parents, Samuel and Willie Jo Ella Malone. John accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior at an early age, and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church. Unfortunately, John’s parents passed away when he was 12 years old and he and his siblings were placed with family and in foster care. John was blessed to have foster parents Andrew and Nepsie Robinson and aunts and uncle, (Minnie, Laura, Lucinda, Carrie, Ida, Almeda and Roy) that made sure that they would always be in close contact with one another. This included attending family reunions which the aunts started in 1935--the family reunions continue to this day. The miracle of their close- knit relationship was truly evident throughout their lives. John Malone excelled in school and graduated from John Adams High School. John joined the U.S. military in 1943 and was a decorated WWII Army veteran. He was a member of the famed ‘Red Ball Express’--Quartermaster corps. As a result of his valiant service, he received a ‘Bronze Star’ for heroism. John continued his mission of public service by working at the Department of the Navy where he met his beautiful wife Charley Mae. Mrs. Charley Mae Malone preceded him in death on April 27, 2020. They were happily married for 74 years. In August 1, 1950, he became a patrolman with the Cleveland Police Department, and was promoted to Detective where he served in the vice unit until 1965. In 1965, he took an 18-month leave of absence to become the first lay Director of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese’s St. Martin De Porres Center. After his successful term as the Center Director, he returned to the Cleveland Police Department. While working full-time, John attended John Carroll University and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology, and also received his teaching certificate. In 1969, John Malone founded Augustine Group Home Society, the first African American owned and operated Group Home in the City of Cleveland and one of the first in the State of Ohio. John Malone retired from the Cleveland Police Department in 1979, and soon after became the District Supervisor of the Division of Safety and Security for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). He served the CMSD until his retirement in June 2001. John was one of the earliest members of Antioch Baptist Church and later in his life became a dedicated member of Greater Harvard Avenue Church of God In Christ. These momentous achievements are second to his being a faithful, devoted husband to the love of his life Charley Mae Malone (deceased); a phenomenal father to his children: Beatrice Malone (deceased), John Malone Jr. (deceased), Yvonne Malcolm, Yolanda Burt (Garey Sr.), Cheryl Pailin (David Sr.); a tremendous grandfather to: Wesley Malone, Dana Smith, Rasheda Cromwell (Joey), Shannon Burt, Garey Burt Jr, David Pailin, Jr., James Pailin, and Charlotte Pailin; a caring great grandfather to: Simone, India, Jaylon, Elijah, Braulio Jr, Maya, Chloe and Jayce. And a loving brother to his sister Vivian and his siblings that have preceded him in death, Willa Mae, Cecilia, Doris, Herman, Samuel, James, and Theodore. Even so, the ultimate charge that John Malone fulfilled was that given to him by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, “Love the Lord your God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind.
