Ira L. Lewis

Ira Lewis Obituary Mrs. Ira L. Lewis was born on September 17, 1937, to the late Joseph B. and Bernice (Harper) Scales in Mississippi. As a young child, Ira and her siblings moved to Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from John Adams High School. Ira met Edward Lewis at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, where he and his mother, (Mary Robinson) were members. His mother was a faithful member of the Usher Board and upon Ira and Edward’s marriage on November 1, 1957, she faithfully continued following in her Mother-in-law’s footsteps. Ira was dedicated to the Usher Board for several years until her health would not allow her to continue physically, but mentally she considered herself right in step with the Board. She was also a member of Canaan’s Adult and Mass choir for several years. Ira Lewis loved to bowl, and because of that, several local churches got together and formed a bowling league to challenge each other in love, named “The Christian Fellowship Bowling League.” Ira LOVED to cook for her family, her church family neighbors and friends. She also loved to bake her signature apple cakes, peanut butter chocolate cookies, and oatmeal raisin walnut cookies! And the greatest part about that, she didn’t keep her sweets to herself; she always shared with others! She was also known as “The Candy Lady” as she would always have a variety of hard candy in her purse, and she’d share that also (passing her full baggie down the pews on Sunday mornings and afternoon programs.) In the early 70’s, Ira was employed at Hupp, Inc. for several years. She later worked at World Almanac until she retired. Ira Lewis departed this life on May 24, 2024, surrounded by love from a host of family members. She leaves to cherish and celebrate her life, her four daughters, Theresa L. (David) Mitchell, Belinda (Wayne) Brown, Iris (Bobby) Bolding and Etta (Vincent) White; brother, George Scales; seven grandchildren, Arita Terrell, Geneva Hicks, Venetta McDonald, Stephanie Hale, Joshua White, Bobby Bolding and Iryss Bolding; ten great-grandchildren; three great greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.
