Christal Martin Obituary Christal Yvette McDowell Martin affectionally known as “Chrissy or “Flossy” was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 9, 1956. She was the fourth child born to Clyde & Dollie Ruth McDowell. Christal was preceded in death by her parents, brother Clyde and nephew Lionel Jr. Christal was educated in the Cleveland Public School System, a 1974 graduate of Glenville High School. Her greatest joy was being a proud mother to her son Dana McDowell and grandmother to Olivia & Kaitlin McDowell. She met and married Steve Martin, although this union departed, they remained good friends until her passing. Christal had a nurturing spirit and chose the health care field as her profession. She obtained an Associate Degree from ICM School of Business for Medical Assistance. Christal worked many years for Dermatologist Dr. Jerome Litt, Cleveland Urban League as an Employment Specialist and St. Luke’s Hospital as a cancer patient caregiver. She later joined Metro Health Hospital working in various positions, with the last one being an Intake supervisor. In finding ways to be supportive of other’s needs, Christal began working for Beechbrook Behavioral Health as a Family Life Educator. Christal joined Cleveland Church of Christ in 1974 where she was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost. As a faithful member, she sang in the choir (Gospel Pearls & Women’s Chorus), participated in several auxiliaries: Credit Union Booster, Junior Church Picnic registrant, Women’s Council and Sunday School Assistant. Christal loved to read, cook, was an avid card player, a very stylish dresser who had a sense of humor. She loved to laugh and was quick witted. She loved Football and loved the Cleveland Browns, instituting “game day” roll call. Chrissy also loved traveling, especially going to family reunions, watching good movies and hosting family gatherings. But more importantly, Christal loved people. She took pride in her ability to make connections and advocating for others. Forever to cherish her memories are her son Dana (Tasha) granddaughters Olivia & Kaitlin, sisters: Carol Brown, Jeannie & Marsha McDowell, Velorie Stephens and Antoinette Bates, brothers: Lionel, Ronnie and Randy McDowell, aunt Brenda Jones, 26 nieces & nephews, 29 great-nieces & nephews, many cousins, saints and friends.
