Bertha Perkins Obituary LIVE STREAMING of funeral services **Facebook Imani United Church of Christ *** Tuesday Bertha Perkins "GG" was born on August 14,1924 to Willie Mae and Luther Johnson in Birmingham, Alabama. She made her transition on Tuesday, December 22,2020. Bertha had four younger sisters.Their mother was frequently ill, so Bertha became a surrogate mother to them. They always praise her for her kindness and generosity to them. After graduating from Parker High School in Alabama, she met and married her lifelong companion, Joe Perkins. In 1952 they relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. Bertha was employed at the St.Luke's Hospital for over 30 years. She retired in 1986. Bertha joined the Gethsemane Baptist Church in 1962 under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Wilbur R. Jones. She rededicated her life to Christ and devoted her time to working in the church. She was a member of the Mission Ministry and the Culinary Committee and also the Nurses Guild. In 1990 when Reverend Stephen Sullivan became Pastor of Gethsemane he recognized her knowledge and love for the word of God. They shared a love for words , the scripture and books related to the scriptures. She became a Sunday School teacher, an occasional Bible study teacher and co-leader of the New Members Team. Bertha was a faithful and industrious member of Gethsemane Baptist church until she became ill and could no longer live alone. She then divided her time between her two children spending six months with each. John and Joann both considered it a blessing and a privilege to have her in their homes. She continued to attend Sunday service with her children at their respective churches, Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church and Imani United Church of Christ, where she later became a member. Bertha was a kind, sweet, intelligent woman with an infectious beautiful smile. She was a classy lady who was always well dressed in hats and suits. She was known as Bertha, Sis Perkins, Mama, Grandmother, Deetee, Grammy but her favorite name was "GG". What she wanted most for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren is that they would follow Matthew 6:33,"Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you" and to always be kind. Bertha leaves to cherish her memory; three sisters, Ruby Rickerson, San Antonio,TX, Louise Charles, Laguna Hills,CA, Edith Condon, Compton,CA,; son, John Johnson (Priscilla) ;daughter, Joann Patterson(John); grandchildren, Kim, John A. (Christina),John E. (Shawndal),Jennifer(Gary),Keisha(David ll), great grandchildren,Robert,Brieana,Brittni, Ebony, Najatt, Kristofer(Marissa), Mardajah, Jay'Sean, Alyna, Jayda, John E. Jr., John A., Jr.,David lll, Jaymari, Victoria, Lucila and Jay'Mhani and nine great- great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband of 55years, Joe Perkins , and her sister Helen Donaldson of California.
