Alphonzo Smith Obituary A. G. (Alphonzo) Smith Sr., affectionately known as "Smitty" was born on February 15, 1925 in Strong, Arkansas to the late Grady and Emma Smith. He was the third of seven children, five boys and two girls: CS (Charles), OB, Grady Jr., Zella Ruth, Helen and Thornton. To his union in marriage with Christine Smith sis children were born: Avestine Smith (preceded him in death), Ernest Lee Smith, Ernestine Smith (preceded him in death), and Vanessa Smith Pulliam. Smitty is also survived by one sister Helen Gadson of Kansas City, KS, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.Smitty retired from the City of Cleveland, Department of Engineering after many faithful years of service. At a young age, Smitty gave his life to Christ and joined Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Strong, Arkansas. Upon arriving in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1950's, he joined Second Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where he served as a faithful member until his death. A life-long musician and lover of Gospel music, he served in the music ministry as a young man at Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Arkansas singing and playing the guitar and Smitty carried this tradition into more than 60 years of devotion and service to his church home Second Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. His love for the Lord compelled Smitty to write and perform Gospel music throughout his life. He was a founding member with the late Bill Spivey of the celebrated Gospel quartet "The Sons of Truth" and he later founded "Smitty and The Sons of Truth" with his sons Alphonzo Smith Jr., and Ernest Lee Smith, co-writing, performing, and recording Gospel music with them through the 1990's and early 2000's.
