Zella Thompson Obituary Zella Mae Murray was born in Athens, Alabama on December 4, 1917, to the late Sam Murray and Jessie Mason. She was preceded in death by her son, John Charles and three great-grandchildren: Junita, Billitis, and Levaughn. Zella Mae experienced the aftermath of two World Wars, The Civil Rights Movement, and the leadership of several presidents. She was educated in the Alabama school system. As a young lady, she relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where she played in a few golf tournaments. Zella Mae met and married the love of her life, Leroy Thompson, and he became a LOVING father to her son John Charles. This union was blessed with two beautiful children, Leroy E. and Carolyn M. Leroy and Zella shared over fifty devoted years together until his passing. Zella worked hard to support her family as a beautician, nurses aide, and seamstress. After many years of faithful service, she retired from Mt. Sinai Hospital, University Hospitals, and Cleveland Clinic Hospital in 1986. In addition to the previously mentioned careers, Ms. Thompson also was a real estate broker. In her earlier years, Zella attended classes in cosmetology, jewelry making, hat making, and upholstery. She also served as a Boy and Girl Scout leader. Left behind t love and cherish Zella’s memories are: her children, Leroy E. and Carolyn M; grandchildren, Vida, Kevin, Brittany, Keyelynn; great-grandchildren, Andrea, Maurice, Anthony, Leah, Treonna, Breona, Tremayne, Trevontas; great-great-grandchildren, Ja’Von, and Royalty. She will be missed by a host of six generations, four Godchildren: Vanessa, Cheryl, Carol, and Cornell, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Zella Mae was a true woman of faith-always showing unconditional love to her family, friends, and neighbors. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Lane Metropolitan CME Church since 1935m, and served in the following ministries: Sunday School Teacher, Usher Board, Stewardess Board and the Metropolitan Matrons. Zella Mae traveled 105 years of life with inner strength, joy, and happiness in serving the Lord.
