Genevieve W. (Harding) McIntyre

Genevieve McIntyre Obituary In the small town of Elgin, Illinois, Wyatt and Leota Harding were blessed with a bundle of joy they named Genevieve Wilda Harding on July 24, 1937. Genevieve and her family relocated to Cleveland in 1939 to join her mother’s family. They lived in a few places until they settled at the “Family House” at 2287 E. 103rd St. Upon moving to E. 103rd Street, the family united with the East Mt. Zion Baptist Church down the street. There she learned the ways of Christ through Sunday School and BYPU. She eventually professed Christ as her savior and was baptized by Pastor William M. Downs. She received her formal education through Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from John Adams High School in 1956. Genevieve worked her way through Kent State University at the Navy Finance Center as she set out to pursue a lifelong dream; being a school teacher. Even though she hadn’t received her college diploma, good grades and a major shortage of teachers afforded her an opportunity to begin her teaching career in 1964 with the Cleveland Public Schools. In 1973, she finally received her Bachelor Degree from Cleveland State University. While in college, she pledged the Alpha Lamda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in 1962 where she remained an active member for over 50 years. Genevieve married Thomas McIntyre in September, 1967. Two sons were born into this union, Thomas Harding and Brian Carlton (who preceded her in death). While teaching and raising her children, Genevieve remained active in Sigma Gamma Rho and East Mt. Zion. At church, she served on the committees for the first two published church directories and the church newsletter. She made sure her children were active at church and she remained a faithful member through the 90’s and the new millennium going to noon day pray meetings and she would occasionally serve in some capacity with Women’s Day until she was unable to drive. In 1992, Genevieve retired after 28 years of service to the Cleveland Public Schools. She busied herself by giving her services as a proofreader to Cleveland Life Magazine and the Call and Post, helping to run a lady’s boutique for Sigma Gamma Rho in the Fatima Family Center, and taking good care of her mother until her demise. Genevieve was a very outgoing, kind, and caring person. She had a great sense of humor and passed that down to her pride and joy; her sons. She took her mother’s place as the matriarch of her extended family because her uncles, aunts, and cousins always checked in with “Gen.” She adored her grandchildren and keeping in touch with her sister, Timmy. Her coworkers of many years were also close friends that she would go on lunch dates with. She took great pride in her home and was known as the lady on E. 189 who was always out in the yard tidying up. She maintained a voice in Ward I where she was a resident as secretary for the local street club and keeping in contact with her councilman. When she could no longer live independently, Genevieve reluctantly agreed to relocate to Columbus, OH, where she could be close to her son, Thomas, and his family. Genevieve departed this life on Saturday, December 26, 2020. She leaves behind to mourn her passing her son, Thomas (Angela), Daughter-in-law Megan, two grandsons, Isaiah and Gavin, her sister, Theresa Holmes (Michael), her uncle, Lon G. Brown (Lobelia), an aunt, Camille Brown, her goddaughter/cousin, Sharon, Batiste (Levi), many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
