Mattie Daniels Obituary THE SERVICE WILL BE LIVESTREAMED Born in Lafayette, Alabama, on March 9, 1935, Mattie Ruth Daniels, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, dedicated her life to her family. Mattie Ruth was the third oldest of six siblings: Willie Lee Burton Sr. (deceased), Wilma Ruth Hill (deceased), Joe Grady Silmon Jr. (deceased), Emery Miller (deceased), Mack Miller (deceased), and Minnie Knox. Mattie Ruth spent most of her life in Cleveland, Ohio, where she raised her family and actively contributed to her community. She was educated in the Cleveland Public Schools and attended John Hay High School. Mattie Ruth was married to Albert Spann Sr. (deceased). Together, they had five children: Robertha Spann, Albert Spann Jr., Anita Spann, Darnell Spann (deceased), and Linda Spann. She later married James Daniels (deceased). Mattie Ruth confessed in Christ early in life. She attended Peace Baptist Church, St. Andrews Missionary Baptist Church, and Jordan Stream Missionary Baptist Church, where she enjoyed fellowship and singing in the choir. Mattie Ruth worked as a lunch aide at Crispus Attucks Elementary School and later at Cleveland Clinic as a medical secretary and housekeeper. She was a savvy businesswoman who owned a few properties and often took care of the upkeep herself. Mattie Ruth was a pillar of her community, known for her kindness, generosity, classy style, no nonsense approach, and steadfast commitment to those around her. She was affectionately known as the “Grandma for the Hood” due to her dedication to feeding the children in her neighborhood. She loved to cook and was always making sure her family and friends were well-fed. She was especially renowned for her delicious cakes and pies. Mattie Ruth was also an avid shopper and loved to read her Bible. Mattie Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Mattie Mae Miller and Joe Grady Silmon Sr., her siblings, Willie Lee Burton Sr., Wilma Ruth Hill, Joe Grady Silmon Jr., Emery Miller, and Mack Miller, her son, Darnell Spann, her grandson, baby Winston Spann, and her former husbands, Albert Spann and James Daniels. Mattie Ruth leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Robertha Spann, Albert Spann Jr., Anita Spann, and Linda Spann; her sister, Minnie Knox; eight grandchildren, Salena Clay, Willie Clay, Benny Spann, Anton Clay, Albert Bailey, Emanuel Spann, Donita Moore, and Rashawda Brasfield; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Mattie Ruth will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a woman of faith, love, and kindness, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
