Marie Washington Obituary Marie Collins Washington was born in Choctaw County, Alabama, on August 24, 1935, to the late Luevinia Mitchell Collins and Booker T. Collins, Sr. She was the first of five children. Some of her known ancestors on her Mother’s side, were grandparents Tensie and Peter Mitchell, great-grandparents Sarah Pugh and Aron Mitchell; and on her Father’s side, grandparents Cora and Joseph Collins, great-grandparents Josephine and Rev. Jerry Whigham, and great-great-grandmother Marie Hill. She salutes and thanks her parents and other ancestors for the stable, Christian life they provided and for making it possible for her to succeed. Marie departed this life on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 2:02 pm. Her family moved to Berea, Ohio when she was five years old. At the age of ten, Marie was baptized at First Baptist Church in Berea. In later years, she was an active member of Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an usher for many years and assisted in Summer Vacation Bible School. In 1953, Marie graduated from John Marshall High School in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a very active student at John Marshall as demonstrated by her participation in Student Council, the Junior Council on World Affairs, and Glee Club among several other extra-curricular activities. After graduation, she worked as a secretary for the United States Coast Guard in Cleveland, Ohio, the Hoover Company in North Canton, Ohio, and later for NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. On December 21, 1957, Marie Collins was united in holy matrimony with Mr. Kenneth Edwin Washington, an air traffic controller and supervisor at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. They lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area during much of their married life. For three years from 1971 to 1974, they lived in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where Kenneth worked as an instructor for the Federal Aviation Administration. Kenneth’s occupation would later take them to Uniontown, Ohio and ultimately Strongsville, Ohio where they settled for multiple decades. After Marie became ill in August of 2020, she lived for a while with her daughter Lisa in Wilmington, Delaware and then with her son Sidney in Brook Park, Ohio. She spent her final years at the Kemper House memory care assisted living facility in Strongsville, OH. For several years, Marie belonged to the Modern Bridgettes Social Club and later in life, she and Kenneth were also members of the Gusto Social Club. In her spare time Marie enjoyed traveling, especially going on cruises, and spending time with her family. She played a significant role in hosting family reunions a few times on both the Washington and Collins sides of the family. She was an avid cook as those who had the pleasure of enjoying her fried chicken or fish can certainly attest to. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Luevinia and Booker T. Collins Sr., her son Duane Erwin Washington, her husband Kenneth Edwin Washington, and her brothers Booker T. Collins Jr. and Henry Collins. She is survived by her son Sidney Alan Washington (Kimberly), her daughter Lisa Marie Washington Williams (Terence), grandchildren Nicholas Alan Washington, Steven Edwin Washington, Jasmine Nicole Williams, Brandon Terence Williams, great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Ameena, and Isabella Washington, sister Daisy Collins Russell (Louis), brother Robert Charles Collins, Sr., sisters-in-law Joan Harlan and Elizabeth Washington, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends who will dearly miss her.
