Lucy L. Burpo

Lucy Burpo Obituary Lucy Leontine Burpo was born February 20, 1927 to Amos Moore and Cynthia Moore in Selma, Alabama. She was educated in Selma and moved to Ohio shortly after graduation. Lucy attended Wilberforce University for a short time. She eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio to live with her Aunt Bertha in hopes of finding better employment opportunities. Lucy’s first job was working for a vacuum company making bags. In this job, she discovered that she was a very good seamstress. Her mother, Cynthia later moved to Cleveland to be with her. In the late 1940’s, Lucy met a young man, Harrison (Harry) Burpo, at her cousin Edward’s home. Harry was also from Alabama and had recently relocated to Cleveland after serving in the United States Army. Later, the couple discovered that some of their relatives knew each other! They were married on July 25, 1949, and were married for 44 years before Harry’s passing in 1993. Lucy and Harrison had one daughter who they loved and cherished, Cynthia Elaine. Lucy accepted Christ at a young age while attending her grandfather’s church in Orville, Alabama. Several years after moving to Cleveland, Lucy joined Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church (GABC) and remained a faithful member for over 60 years. She was a proud member of the GABC Progressive League where she previously served as chaplain. Lucy was a “lady’s lady.” She had a passion for fashion, decorating, and working in her yard. She always made sure her outfits were coordinated! She also looked forward to spring when it was time to plant new flowers. Lucy was an excellent seamstress, and many looked to her for clothing suggestions and alterations. Lucy was a quiet person, but many found out she had a great sense of humor. She was a big fan of the NBA, especially the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lucy was a proud grandmother of Destiny Shante and Sterling Jamison. She never missed an opportunity to share their special moments with them. She was also honored to be a great-grandmother to Ari Tyson and Morgan Sarai. Lucy was called to rest by the Lord on April 6, 2023, at the blessed age of 96. She leaves to forever cherish her memory, devoted daughter Cynthia Goodrum; two grandchildren; Destiny Jenkins (Stephen), Sterling J. Goodrum; two great-grandchildren; Ari Tyson Goodrum Colon ,Morgan Sarai Jenkins, sister; Nancy Ruth Jackson (Terry), aunt; Martha Moore, sister-in-laws; Leola Mauldin, Mamie Quarles, and a host of relatives and friends.
