Linwood James Smith Sr.

Linwood Smith Sr. Obituary Linwood James Smith, Sr., (Sonny), son of the late Boyd Sr, and Henrietta Smith, was born June 20, 1927 in Warrenton, North Carolina. He departed this life on January 29, 2021. He graduated from John R. Hawkins School in Warrenton in 1947 and was drafted into the United States Army where he served for 2 years. He returned from service to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina A&T State University, and was initiated into the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, the Alpha Nu Chapter on April 24, 1951. Two years later, Linwood graduated from North Carolina A&T State University and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Linwood worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1954 to 1960. In 1961, he became the Commissioner of Rehabilitation and Conservation for the City of Cleveland. During this same time, Linwood earned his MPA from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. From 1978 to 1989, Linwood was Vice President INA Community Services (Insurance Company of North America). Linwood served as Cleveland City Councilman of Ward 1 from 1981-1982. He taught Political Science at Cuyahoga Community College from 1985 to 2000. Linwood was a real estate agent for McMullen Realty, and retired after 21 years. Linwood was active in the community all his life. In 1961, he organized Cleveland Alumni Chapter of N.C. A&T State University and was the past president. Linwood was also president of Lee-Harvard Community Services Association between the years 1974 and 1976. Linwood was a founding member of the Handicappers Golf Club and past president in 1975. As a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Linwood served as Chairman Trustee Board and Chairman of Church Council. Linwood was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Cleveland Alumni for more than sixty years. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Member of the Housing Board, Vice Chairman of the Kappa Golf Committee, Kappa Reporter for eight years and worked with the Guide Right Program at Cleveland’s East High School. Linwood was preceded in death by his son Lyle Jay Smith, and siblings Andrew, Boyd Jr., Doris Perry, Helen Davis, and Lonnie.
