Mr. James W. Davis

Celebrating the Life of James W. Davis April 11, 1934 – February 4, 2017 On April 11, 1934 Winnie and James Davis Sr. were the proud parents of their youngest son, James W. Davis Jr. James was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the last of eight children in the family, four sisters and four brothers. At an early age James and two of his sisters, Louise and Almeta moved to Jacksonville Florida and were raised by their Grandmother Almeta Johnson. She provided love and discipline, which made them a close and warm family. His early years were full of excitement and mischief. There was never a dull moment. He always shared the many times he got in and out of trouble. His tender years were typical of a curious boy seeking adventures, as boys do. He was always reminded that while he was a boy, he should like act a boy, but when he became a man, he should act like a man. He completed his education in Jacksonville, Florida and enlisted into the United States Air Force. He traveled extensively, which included 37 foreign countries. James returned to Ohio in the 50’s, and studied at Ashland Theologian College and Cuyahoga Community College. He joined the Glenville Seventh-day Adventist Church and married the former Barbara Lou Guy on October 20, 1957. To this union they have three daughters, Karen, Barbara Jean and Angela. The parents were proud of their daughter’s hard work and six lovely grandchildren. James deep devotion to his wife and family has greatly enhanced his spiritual growth. He became an active member in the Glenville Church and was surrounded by many great pastoral leaders which greatly influenced his spiritual life. His faithfulness and dedication led him to be assigned to the Lakeview Church in Lorain, Ohio, of the Allegheny West Conference in 1982. Working for the Lord has been a major part and enjoyment in his life, with his wife by his side. Through the Holy Spirit, many have been won to this precious truth. He was also privileged to pastor the Park Street Seventh-day Adventist Church in Oberlin, Ohio. His next assignment was the Alpha & Omega Seventh-day Adventist Church in Warren, Ohio in July of 1998. While Ministering in Warren, the church made a complete recovery from the Oak Street fire of 1999. With the diligent support of the membership, God blessed the church with its new location at 1247 Woodland & Laird Avenue, completely renovated and free of debt. The Warren Community Service Department of the church has been strengthened, and has become an intricate part of the ministry in the neighborhood. One of his most rewarding activities was being a team member of the Glenville Young Adult Club, (later known as the Glenville Adult Club). The spiritual fellowship of this organization for over 41 years created a bond that he hopes to continue in heaven. For everyone who attended, he leaves you with this message, “I will see you in Heaven” His Pastoral ministry has provided him the opportunity to travel throughout all 50 states in the United States and preach on 3 continents. One of his proudest accomplishments was to assist Pastor Lacey White in the baptism of hundreds of souls while in Zambia, Africa. On February 4, 2017 he peacefully went to sleep in Christ with his wife and children by his side. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara of 59 years, his daughters Karen Davis, Barbara Jean Washington (Patrick) and Angela Davis; honorary sons and daughters; Victor Carter (Baby), Vincent Carter (Delia), Yolanda Carter (Michael), and Wanda Carter; six grandchildren: Lamar Russaw, Ricky Wilkens, Tyler Wilkens, Malcolm Taylor IV, Wesley Washington and Kendyll Washington; two sister-in-laws: Mary Guy and Evelyn Guy; four godchildren, Sharolyn Colley, Danielle Arthurs Moody, Eurell Joseph and Clara Huff; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
