Idella Herndon Obituary Idella (Dell) Herndon, affectionately known as Nunck to her beloved siblings. Idella was born on October 6, 1932, in Yazoo County, Mississippi, to the late Allen and Lillie Bell (Newman) Johnson. She was the eldest of seven children: Alberta, Estella, Allen (Bruce), Corine, Bernice, and Daisy. Idella was raised on a 164-acre farm in Yahoo County, Mississippi, where she learned the values of hard work, family, and faith. She took her role as the eldest very seriously, serving as a guiding force and protector of her family. At a young age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Newport Baptist Church in Holmes County, Mississippi. Upon settling in Cleveland, she became a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church before later joining Affinity Missionary Baptist Church, where her faith continued to be the foundation of her life. She received her formal education in the Mississippi school system, before making a significant move north in the 1960s to Cleveland, Ohio. She was a firm believer in the importance of education. Often encouraging those around her to strive for knowledge and success. After the passing of her beloved mother, Lillie Bell, Idella played a pivotal role in raising her youngest sister, Daisy. Demonstrating her deep sense of love and responsibility toward her family. Idella had a gift for conversation. She could effortlessly engage with people from all walks of life. She had a hilarious sense of humor and a spicy personality. Idella brought joy and laughter to those who knew her. She had an exquisite sense of style and fashion. She loved shopping and took pride in her appearance, ensuring she was always polished, dignified and refined. Her favorite perfume was by Este'e Lauder. Idella worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Montefiore Nursing Home, alongside her late sister: Alberta, and late aunt : Mary DeFreeze. She eventually retired from Montefiore, leaving behind a legacy of care and commitment to those she served. On January 8, 1966, Idella married the love of her life, John Herndon of Troy, Alabama. John preceded her in death February 27, 2012, they were married for 46 years. John, was an exceptional cook and baker, he complemented Idella's strong sense of order and cleanliness. Their home was a place of warmth, love, and hospitality. Idella Herndon’s life was a testament to strength, love, faith, and family. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of wisdom, kindness, and resilience. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
