George Calhoun Perr McNeezer

George McNeezer Obituary George Calhoun Perr McNeezer, Jr. was the only child born to Viola Johnson and George A. McNezer on October 15, 1926, in Roba, Alabama. Because his mother was a full time Nanny, George was raised by his grandparents and aunt who were a mix of immigrant Africans, Scottish, English, and Native American. Grandfather Len Johnson, was a carpenter and farmer, so he taught George how to run the farm and fix, or build, just about everything. He also taught him how to install electrical wiring in homes, and how to calmly communicate with all sorts of people. George professed his belief in God at an early age at Mount Canaan Baptist Church, and later Southern Baptist Church in Cleveland. He was educated at the Roba Training School. George was 16 years old when he went to live with relatives in Cleveland, Ohio. He quickly found a job at the National Bronze Distributors and started sending money home. He worked there for a little over a year, when in late December of 1944 he landed a job at Ferro Engineering. Five days later he was drafted into the Navy. Before going to basic training, he returned to Alabama to propose to Edna Mae Germany. She excepted and they were married on January 5th, 1945. Between 1945 and 1959 George and Edna became the proud parents of 7 children. Sadly, they did not get a chance to even hold 4 of their precious babies. George was in the Navy for only a few months and World War II ended. He returned to work at Ferro Engineering. He had advanced to Foreman by the time he retired from Ferro in 1991. Starting in about 1946, George began to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a Journeyman Electrician. Unfortunately, the apprenticeship programs, and other certifiable training opportunities, were closed to him. So, he did the next best thing, he worked with friends who did non-union electrical work on weekends, until the mid-70’s. In 1957 Uncle Willie Davis opened a T.V. repair shop on Quincy Avenue, and George worked as a television repairman whenever he could. He was a very talented singer and dancer. He was once offered an acting role in Hollywood, and singing spot with the Mighty Clouds of Joy, but his Grandfather Len reminded him of his responsibility to be there for his family, so he turned them down. During his life time George was always busy working, but he always found time to have fun. He would regularly take a car full of kids to the amusement parks. He loved travelling, going out to dinner, talking, hosting parties and visiting family and friends. He also loved to give long talks about Roba Alabama. Growing up during the Great Depression made him conscious of the problems of the world, and after watching his family feed and provide shelter for anyone in need, he did the same all of his life. George was affectionally called Junior, June bug, Mack, Mr. Mack, Mr. G, Brother-in-Law, Uncle, Grandfather, Jump Daddy, Pops and Daddy by the people who trusted and loved him. Preceding him in death were his wife Edna McNeezer, his children, Gwendolyn McNeezer, Jacqueline McNeezer, Carolyn Daniels, Marion McNeezer, Lamar McNeezer and Renee Green. He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted daughter Edith McNeezer Henderson, Brother-in-Laws James Germany (Elaine), Milton Germany (Lucille), Sister-in-Laws Evelyn Sanford and Ruth Ray (Wilford). Grandchildren Anthony McNeezer (Lisa), Nick Daniels (Yolanda), Jameel Daniels (Jeanette), Aleesha Bradick (Gerald), Damika Copeland (Darsell), Marselle McNeezer, Derek Henderson (Alicia), Robert Murphy (Shemeka), Terence Jones (Kayleigh), Christian Green, George Earl McNeezer, Rio Hancock (Wesley) and Chase Henderson. Great-Grandchildren Antonio and Jacqueline McNeezer, D’Metri Daniels, Alyssa Bailey, Ayanna Tisdale and Vincent Harper, Jayeesha, Janaya and Tristian Williams-Daniels, Jaicee Jeffrey, Aaron and Danielle Copeland, Maceo McNeezer, Derico Henderson, Sean, Jordan, Kendyll and Kori Murphy, Nathan and Jacob Jones, Krsnaya and Vrndavan Smith, Jailoni McNeezer, Georgia and Ruby Hancock, and Apollo Henderson.
