GEORGE FULTON DIXON, III George Fulton Dixon, III was born on January 22, 1953, to the parents of Herman and Emma Gertrude Dixon. He was called home to heaven on July 3, 2021. Preceding him in death were his parents and siblings including Herman, Jr., Georgia, Delores, and Robert. He attended the Cleveland Public Schools graduating from East Tech High School in 1971. He joined Central Christian Church as a youngster. George married the love of his life Sandra Robinson in 1985 with an elaborate wedding and reception. To this union was born two sons, George IV, and Brandon. He has one granddaughter, Noella and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and other family members who “Dearly Loved” George. George attended Ohio University graduating in 1976. Ohio University (OU) was a great opportunity for George to learn and fine tune the business skills his family instilled in him at a young age. On campus at OU he became a well- known campus leader, fraternity member of Alpha Phi Alpha, and the lists of his onsite campus activities is endless. Everyone knew and loved “BIG GEORGE” and his legacy with OU will live on with the OU Family forever. Born to lead, George returned from Ohio University to hometown Cleveland, Ohio and immediately became an entrepreneur, well- known and respected businessman, and community leader. The “Hardest Working Man” in Cleveland George owned the Dixon Market, The Lancer, Club Togo, and G Lancers on 21. The highlight of his business career was the opening of The Lancer Restaurant on E. 77th & Carnegie. The Lancer quickly built a reputation as the place to “See and be Seen” in Cleveland and the home of Cleveland’s finest community leaders and events. George soon became known as the legendary “BIG DADDY” and without doubt was the most popular man in town. Local politicians hosted fundraisers of all types and met frequently at The Lancer for roundtable discussions on everything you can imagine. National entertainers and celebrities knew a visit to Cleveland required a stop by The Lancer. Clevelanders will long remember the “delicious food” at The Lancer. Known for the “Best Perch Dinners” and fish dinners in town. It was not uncommon to see people every Friday without fail, stopping by The Lancer for fish, a cocktail, and good conversation. The Lancer hosted a Who’s Who of events over the years and you never knew who might stop by if you sat at the bar for a few hours. Home of the legendary “Friday Night Jazz” The Lancer showcased Cleveland’s finest local jazz groups, singers, and entertainers. Later George opened The Togo and he continued his legacy of big fun and good times with everyone. Hosting many big events at The Lancer and The Togo at the same time. Clevelanders will never forget his annual Birthday Party and the limousine rides between both venues. Great times and memories of Cleveland’s finest with the one and only Legendary, “Big Daddy, George Dixon”!! A man with a “ Heart of Gold” George regularly gave back to the community and families in need surrounding The Lancer and the Dixon Market. When in need, you knew George was going to help in some manner. His generosity to neighbors and families touched by his kindness will hold a special place in the hearts of the Cedar, Carnegie, Hough and Glenville communities forever. George was appointed to the RTA Board of Trustees by Mayor Michael R. White in 1992 and served on the RTA Board for more than 25 years including Chairman of the Board (longest serving Chairman) for more than 20 years. Moving onto APTA the national transit association serving as APTA National Chairman and receiving APTA’s OUTSTANDING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION BOARD MEMBER award. He was extremely proud of his transit accomplishments both locally and nationally. His Board Appointments include: RTA Board of Trustee’s, 25 years of service. Cleveland School Board Member, 5 years of service. Ohio Turnpike Board Appointment by President William J. Clinton to the Advisory Committee on Personal Motor Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Reductions Additionally, he was a 33rd Mason and former member of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland.
