Evelyne Yvonne (Reid) Newsome

Evelyne Newsome Obituary On February 14, 1940 in Wheelwright, Kentucky, Evelyne Yvonne was born to the late Edgar and Nettie Reid. Evelyne lived in Wheelwright for the first five years of her life before moving to Cleveland, Ohio.Evelyne confessed her love for God at an early age. She was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church. Evelyne attended church all day on Sundays with her mother and other siblings. She enjoyed singing in the choir. At the age of six Evelyne sang duets with her sister Noreen. Even as a teenager Evelyne directed the youth choir while her sister, Noreen, played the piano. The sister duo would continue playing and directing until illness disabled Noreen’s ability to play, but Evelyne continued to direct. She joined Shiloh Baptist Church and directed the choir in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Evelyne loved working with young people and in 1973 she formed the Christian Community Choir. Her station wagon was filled with Community choir members every week heading to rehearsals and singing engagements. In the fall of 1973, she joined Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church and continued directing the choir. Evelyne’s role in music was elevated as she was appointed the minister of music for Greater Faith. She continued with that ministry for thirty-two years. In 2005, Evelyne joined Damascus Baptist Church where she and her sister formed the Echoes of Praise youth choir. Later, Evelyne began directing The Voices of Damascus and became the minister of music at Damascus Missionary Baptist Church.We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered their support and condolences during this difficult time.
