Elizabeth Washington Obituary Elizabeth Johnson Washington, 97, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2021. She leaves behind her brother Shelton Allison, her sons Arthur (and his wife Linda) and David Washington, her daughter June Washington Smith, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever cherish their time with her. She is predeceased by her parents, her former husband, Arthur Washington, her brothers Emerson and Samuel Washington, and her sister, Cubie Faye Allison Randolph. Elizabeth was born in Lecompte, Louisiana to Emerson Johnson and Amanda Bordelon Johnson on June 8, 1924. At age three, she moved with her family to Orange, Texas, where she spent her childhood years before attending Prairie View A&M University, graduating with a degree in elementary and high school education. She married Arthur Washington on July 18, 1947, and together they raised their three children in Dallas, Texas. Elizabeth began working as a schoolteacher in the Dallas Independent School District, a job she cherished and held for over 60 years, refusing to retire until age 90! She loved her students and helping them succeed, especially those who struggled. She often talked about the importance of a good education, a value she inherited from her grandmother and mother and passed on to her own children and grandchildren. Instrumental music was also a passion for Elizabeth. She played both the piano and the saxophone and instilled a love of musical performance in her family. In the 1950’s she embraced the Baha’i Faith–attracted to the world religion’s promotion of the unity of humankind–and served the Dallas Baha’i community with love and grace. Building a better world for everyone was paramount to Elizabeth, who served on the local boards of the United Nations Association, Peacemakers Association, Peace Center, and Amnesty International. In 2006, at the age of 82, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of making a Baha’i pilgrimage to Haifa, Israel. She will be so very missed. A private interment was held in Cleveland, Ohio, and a Celebration of Life service will be held in Dallas, Texas, on a date yet to be determined in 2022.
