David Adams Obituary David Adams Jr. (October 18, 1937 – April 28, 2020) was born second of two children to the late Dave Adams Sr. and Mae Willie Hampton Adams in Sheffield, Alabama. David was nurtured spiritually as a child at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Sheffield. He accepted Christ at an early age. He had fond memories of the church picnics, Easter and Christmas programs, and other church activities he enjoyed while growing up. David was educated in the Colbert County School System in Sheffield, Alabama. He attended Sterling High School, and although he excelled in football, basketball and track, his first love was football, where he played the position of quarterback. David graduated high school in 1957 and attended Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. While attending Alabama State, David became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was a College Marshal (a group that patrolled and provided security for the college), a member of the College Council, an alto saxophonist in the band, and a participant of many other extracurricular activities on campus. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1961. Immediately after graduation, David was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in October 1963. After leaving the Army, David moved to Cleveland, and on December 21, 1963, he married Julian B. Inghram, his college sweetheart. To this union, three children were born. David became a secondary education science teacher in the Cleveland Municipal School District. A skilled craftsman with an entrepreneurial spirit, he had a general contracting business and also owned several rental properties. He received a Master of Education degree in Administration in 1977 from Cleveland State University, and shortly thereafter joined the District in desegregating the schools. David worked in a myriad of positions, including logistics and transportation, and retired as Director of Transportation in 1996. After retiring David could not sit home. He enjoyed his love of traveling for a while, but decided to embark on another career. He chose CEOGC (Council for Economic Opportunities in Greater Cleveland). He was the Director of Transportation and Facilities, where he oversaw maintenance and construction of several Head Start campuses and career aid agencies, including the Carl B. Stokes Center. After a second retirement in 2006, David decided to pursue his love of traveling again, and as a result he visited 43 of the 50 United States and many points of interest abroad. During his time at CMSD and CEOGC, David’s career of military service continued in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was appointed as a warrant officer specializing in counterintelligence, and ultimately achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer III (CW-3). He retired from the Army Reserve after 22 years. David was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and served faithfully until his health started to fail. David’s hobbies included, but were not limited to: motorcycling; golf; fishing; HO scale model railroading; and flying remote-control helicopters. Both of David’s parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Julian B.; his two sons, Keith David (Daphne) of Mason, Ohio, and Kenneth Darnell (Bozena) of Vernon Hills, Illinois; one daughter, Karen Dianne (Dr. Steven) Chandler of Hickory Hills, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Zoe A. Adams, Kara A. Chandler, Magdalena S. Adams, Stephanie A. Chandler, Carter A. Adams, Kylie A. Chandler, and Isabelle S. Adams; one sister, Hannah (Robert, deceased) Goodloe of Tuscumbia, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
