Bernice Askew Obituary Journey of Life Bernice Askew, lovingly known as Bea, Ganny, G, GG and Lena was born on December 4, 1932, in Brundidge, Alabama, She was the youngest of two children born to Pinkie L. Copeland and Samuel Griffin. Her parents and her sister, Willie Jean Nichols preceded her in death. Bernice grew up in Cleveland Ohio, where she received her education through the Cleveland Public School System. Bernice was a dedicated worker throughout her life. She worked at various companies, including Miller Drug Store and the Molded Fiber Glass Company. She later transitioned to domestic work for private families, where her strong work ethic and lloving spirit touched the lives of many. She retired in 2007. On September 29, 1950, Bernice married Adelbert Roberts, and together they welcomed their cherished daughter, Lillie. Later in life, on June 3, 1973, Bernice found love again and married George Askew, with whom she continued to build a life full of love and faith. Bernice's spiritual journey began early at Little Rock Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.C. Clark. In 1999, Bernice became a faithful member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Larry L. Harris. Bernice served with dedication in the New Beginnings Ministry and the Sick & Shut-In Ministry. She was also deeply committed to the People of the Way Prison Ministry, where she provided food and care for the homeless, exemplifying her compassion and dedication to helping others. Her faith was the guiding force of her life, and she touched the hearts of all who knew her with her kindness and generosity. Bernice found peace and joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as fishing, which allowed her to connect with nature and create lasting memories with family and friends. She also loved gardening, shopping, and spending time in the kitchen. Her cooking was legendary among family and friends—her chicken and dressing, buttered breadcrumb broccoli and cauliflower mix, and fried corn and fried chicken were the highlights of family gatherings, lovingly prepared and shared with those she cherished most. Above all, Bernice was a devoted family woman. She deeply loved her family and found immense joy in the moments she spent with them, especially with her great-grandson, Quentin. Her love, wisdom, and warmth created a lasting legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of her loved ones. On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, Bernice was called home to glory from her residence. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lillie Blair, granddaughter, TeNita Bryant, bonus granddaughter, Anissia Blair, great-grandson, Quentin Bryant, nieces, Paula Mabrey and Laura Garrett, cousin, Melvina Johnson, best friend, Toretha James, as well as a host of grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
